Capsule #4 ft. Ali Grace

Glasto lessons, Afrofuturism, and songs for outside

Hello hello ❣️

Happy Friday once more!

Predictably, and like the rest of your Instagram feed, I’m feeling soppy about Glastonbury. I apologise for that. So this is a bit of a love letter of an issue. To the fashion, of course, but also to the lasting impacts of experiencing real joy and freedom. It’s good for us! And we should remember why.

I’m also dropping some great recommendations of stuff to read, watch, and listen to, in case your weekend needs a little boost, and I’m dying to hear what you think of our clairvoyant prediction at the bottom…

If you ever feel so inclined to chat back to me, just hit reply on the email. You can also DM me on Instagram. I’m not lonely I just like you 🫣🫂

Let’s all try…

Colour blocking as a group. Glastonbury is known for its festival fashion, yes, but also for revellers’ commitment to fancy dress. And as much as I like to see a man dressed as a worm, I was very keen on the groups committing to a specific colour each day. Red works so well. Blue is great. Green, too. I’m sad that I don’t have any photos of this for you, but in lieu of that I’m sharing three iconic red looks to kickstart your inspo.

Emma Chamberlain at Coachella last year, Rina Sawayama in Blumarine Pre-Fall ‘22, and Alexa Chung in a velvet Saint Laurent skirt suit.

Speaking of Glastonbury icons…

I haven’t stopped thinking about Sudan Archives after her killer set on Saturday. Her outfit made of belts almost made it into the red collection above, but I worried about all of our abilities to source and ultimately wear such stuff. But that’s what Ms Archives (real name Brittney Parks) is all about. Pushing forwards with left-field options, fusing influence from Sudanese violins and Irish jigs with experimental electronic beats and hip-hop. My friend and colleague, Freddie, interviewed Sudan this week and asked her about her Glasto look for us here at Capsule. She said, “when I saw that look, I was like, you better put me in them belts. It’s red. It’s powerful.” Not wrong!

And if you have a spare pocket of time this summer, I recommend diving further into the world of Afrofuturism. This podcast, from writer Hanif Abdurraqib, is a good place to start. It gets going after the five minute mark, where he chats to Sudan Archives, plus Jenna Wortham and Kimberly Drew, who put out the book Black Futures during the pandemic.

‘There Are Black People in the Future’ by Alisha B. Wormsley, on display in Detroit in 2019 for an exhibition called Manifest Destiny.

I hate to say it but it’s true…

Being online feels like a a bit of a flop right now. Is it because it’s nice outside? Is it because I just spent a few days in a field trying to preserve my phone battery? Did Elon mess up Twitter beyond repair? I don’t know exactly why, but I’m not loving being on my phone. My friend sent me this tweet to validate me. And I want to hear from you on this: has anything shifted? Are you less keen on your feeds? Or is there something you love that’s pulling you back in? Tell tell tell. Reply to this email! 💌

Getting my serotonin from…

This week, Ali Grace popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅‍♀️ …

Ali is a jewellery designer based in New York City. Her Ali Grace collection is sustainably handcrafted in NYC from recycled precious metals and ethically-mined diamonds and gemstones. Ali Grace Jewelry has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, WWD, Vogue Italia, and L’Officiel.

🔥🔥🔥Hot🔥🔥🔥

Bike rides along the East River & West Side Hwy, making time to spend with family, beach hangs with friends, summer dresses, sushi, stacked statement rings, live music

Hot Not… 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

NYC summer humidity, flip flops in the city, orange wine, 'too cool for school', negativity, bailing last minute on plans

📺 Watching: I Think You Should Leave season 3. Enjoying it way more than season 2. Is it better or was I feeling bad when the last one came out?

📖 Reading: Yellowface, a literary thriller novel by R.F. Kuang. A page turner that’s easy to pick back up between chats with your friends. Get it in the UK or the US.

🎧 Listening to: Natural Brown Prom Queen by Sudan Archives, obvs, ‘Green-Yellow Field’ by Blue Lake, which sounds like a Sunday afternoon in a park, and the Blondshell version of ‘Charm You’, my favourite song by Samia.

See that little fringe flick above Dolly’s eyes? There’s a clue. She’s giving you a sign. Her hair (fur?) is flicking to one side. In other words, she’s edging towards the side part, and thinks lots of you dear readers may do the same in coming months. Sofia Richie has committed to the look and the girlies have noticed it:

But as my dear friend Sophie says:

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how you’re finding Capsule - let me know here. See you next week 💋
