Hello hello,

The final issue of the year!!! Whether you joined last month or having been riding with me for a little longer, thank you so much for being here and reading Capsule each week. It is a joy to put together and even more joyful to get your feedback and hear that you value it. 🫶

To wrap us up, I’m here to deliver the results from our Capsule Awards 2024, as voted by you. One lady won big… let’s manifest getting her in the newsletter in future. 🖤

And as ever, there’s also the news you may have missed this week, a great Hot & Not, and a stack of recs for your weekend.

With love and cheer,

Holly x

Capsule Awards 2024 — The Winners

Thank you for voting in the inaugural Capsule Awards & Trend or Timeless last week! I had a great time refreshing the Google form each day watching the percentages change. For real.

And here are your results:

🏆 Most iconic pop culture moment 🏆 - Charli xcx & Lorde working it out on the remix

Two formative mornings this year: first waking up to the remix and hearing the Lorde verse, and then the video from Charli’s birthday party

  • Charli xcx and Lorde working it out on the remix - 52.3%

  • Chappell Roan’s crowd at the Gov Ball - 15%

  • JLo cancelling her tour after heartbreak (and poor ticket sales) - 6.5%

  • “Holding space” at the Wicked press tour - 26.2%

🏆 Best Skims campaign 🏆 - Charli xcx

I want you to know that Lana was in the lead for ages but late voters swung it over to Charli. It is good.

  • Charli xcx - 32.7%

  • Lana Del Rey for Valentine’s Day - 24.3%

  • Sabrina Carpenter - 28%

  • Kim x Kourtney x Dolce & Gabbana - 15%

🏆 Best magazine cover 🏆 - Rihanna for Interview by Nadia Lee Cohen

But of course

  • Rihanna for Interview magazine by Nadia Lee Cohen - 49.5%

  • Charli xcx for New York Magazine by David LaChapelle - 25.2%

  • Björk for Vogue Scandinavia by Vidar Logi - 17.8%

  • Addison Rae for Perfect magazine by Carin Backoff - 7.5%

  • Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) - 20.6%

  • Jenna Ortega (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) - 18.7%

  • Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) - 5.6%

🏆 Best overall fashion moment 🏆 - Zendaya in the Mügler robot suit

Honestly thought the Margiela show would win but then this as a singular moment is hard to top

  • Zendaya in the Mügler Couture 1995 robot suit for the London premiere of Dune: Part Two - 57.9%

  • John Galliano’s Margiela Artisanal show - 24.3%

  • Bella Hadid returns to the runway with Saint Laurent - 12.1%

  • Kylie Jenner closing the Coperni show at Disneyland Paris - 5.6%

🏆 Favourite trend 🏆 - Western

I see more preppy dressing out and about but the Western stuff is better at world building

  • Ayo Edebiri - 27.1%

  • Greta Lee - 23.4%

  • Bella Hadid - 7.5%

🏆 Best dressed man 🏆 - Paul Mescal

Again Rocky was in the lead for so long and the late comers campaigned for Paul. To be fair I think he’s impacted how regular men dress more than anyone else for a long time. Taking a moment here to remember the time I saw Paul in Camden tube and told him I loved Aftersun :)

And finally…

News you may have missed from the Capsule universe this week:

  • We’re all still wondering where Jonathan Anderson might be headed, as this week we found out there will be no JW Anderson show at London Fashion Week in February

  • Speaking of fashion weeks, Calvin Klein will return to NYFW in Feb with Veronica Leoni’s debut after more than 6 years

  • Gracie Abrams is on the cover of NYLON

  • Another Elle Fanning slay, this time in a Saint Laurent suit

  • Also lots of great looks from Lily-Rose Depp on the Nosferatu press tour

  • SZA tapped Ben Stiller for her new music video ahead of dropping LANA, the SOS deluxe album

  • And Charli xcx popped up at the Billie Eilish show to perform Guess. It was great but I’m still worried about that nerve damage in her neck with these moves

This week, Simon Doherty popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅‍♀️ …

Simon is a writer and the editor of roughcast mag, a DIY publication.

🔥🔥🔥Hot🔥🔥🔥

Treating freelancers well, banning phones in clubs, bi men, indy publications, an intense competitive streak that only emerges at car boot sales or at all-you-can-eat buffets, Corbyn, tipping food delivery people, psychedelic-assisted therapy, FOUR DAY WORKING WEEK (do it now!), no Slack or emails on your phone, ecstasy, as a vibe

Hot Not… 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

Cocaine, as a vibe, NFTs, prospective employers that say “we're a family”, Netflix drawing out what could have been an hour-long documentary to six parts, Twitter, ‘manifesting’, AI in general, social media in general, nicotine, crypto, wellness influencers, British people claiming to be shamans, being cornered in an afterparty by someone who has taken too much coke and wants to talk and talk and talk until they stub their toe and lose their vape, taking out a number of subscriptions only to forget them all, UX design that makes it almost impossible to cancel a subscription (evil), people who advertise for a job using the phrase “content wizard”, anyone who has ever uttered the words “content wizard”, the fucking cost of simply… living (cost of living), community guidelines, your landlord’s second home in France

📺 Watching: Queer in the cinema. Plus Human Magic, the new Ilana Glazer special, Billie Eilish’s eighth annual interview with Variety, and this Doechii x Issa Rae performance for Genius Open Mic.

📖 Reading: ‘How Does My Divorce Make You Feel?’, a first person essay from Dr Lilly Jay (aka Ethan Slater’s ex-wife). Also this essay on bag charms and authenticity, Daisy Edgar-Jones’s BTS photo diary from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and this roundup of the paparazzi photos that defined 2024 - some total gems I had forgotten about!

Like this: A newly-divorced Natalie Portman having a cigarette with Paul Mescal on May 30th

🎧 Listening to: The new SZA album when it drops in the next few hours? Plus Ilana Glazer on the Good Children podcast, this new Miley song from The Last Showgirl soundtrack, this new Julien Baker x TORRES song, and ‘Good Guy’, the new Julia Jacklin song with Faye Webster.

Winnie in an elf hat

The Doechii effect looms large right now, and does that mean we’ll all turn to face tape in the coming months? Winnie isn’t sure, but knows there’s always a market for looking snatched without doing invasive stuff.

If you’d like to adopt Winnie or one of her friends, click here to learn more.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how you’re finding Capsule - let me know here. And if you have a friend who might like it, do refer them! 🥺
