Capsule #11 - New York Edit! ft. Nia Thomas
Egg freezing, Dimes Square, and silkie chickens
Hello hello!
Welcome to our inaugural New York edit 🏙🍎🗽🚕🌭🐀!! We’ll have more of these in the future, particularly as The News Movement (Capsule’s parent company) is based out of London and New York. We’re trying to make NYLON a thing. We love a big city.
I’m handing over the mic this week to Bridie Chillemi, a New York-based model and my lovely colleague at TNM. Bridie modelled full-time for eight years, then changed things up by spending lockdown as a biodynamic farmer (love that for her).
These days, alongside modelling, she finds a steady home as Operations Lead for TNM’s New York office. She’s a very proud mom of two adorable black cats, Green and Johnny Cash, and originally hails from Sleepy Hollow, if you need any tips for Halloween. 🎃
She’s also currently THE FEET of Birkenstock. Huge.
Enjoy her edit!

The top thing on my mind right now…
Egg freezing. As I embark on my own egg freezing journey, I’ve realised that no one really talks about it, so I will! It’s terrifying, it’s liberating, and mind boggling all at the same time. Taking your future into your own hands sounds daunting and that’s without mentioning the number of needles involved… but being able to allow life to unfold without the pressure of a ticking biological clock really sold me. By sharing my experience, I hope to contribute to a more open and supportive dialogue around this transformative decision. I think I've learned that you can't really predict how you'll feel until you do something, and to take it a tiny bit at a time. I cried the second I opened my box of meds - it was so overwhelming just seeing it all there together. But we carry on! A day at a time.
It’s a lot!
Let me tell you about…
Dimes Square! Ever heard of a “microneighborhood”? That’s Dimes Square, right in the middle of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. Named after Dimes restaurant, this microneighborhood blew up over the last few years. People love to hate it, and hate to love it. It’s one of those ‘who’s who’ places, a constant battle between locals and rich transplants. Whether you’re into it or can’t think of anything worse, you can’t deny that the bar and restaurant scene there is some of the best in New York (my go-tos are Kikis & Forgtmenot).
The vibe
A trend I’m always here for is…
The Canadian Tuxedo, AKA double denim. Sign me up! I live for a denim on denim look. I know it’s not for everyone but hear me out. I’m not talking about Britney and Justin (sorry not sorry), think more Elvis and chic Ralph Lauren Americana vibes (despite the name of the trend). There’s a fine line on styling this iconic look, but if you get it right, it's GOOD.
Kudos to the random lady on Pinterest, Bella Hadid, and Mr Chris Pine
And my latest obsession is…
Silkie chickens! They're fluffy, they're tiny… Google them and thank me later. I may or may not be getting two of them soon. 🐓
I love you
This week, Nia Thomas popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅♀️ …
Nia is a designer and founder of NIA THOMAS, an ethically made, Black woman-owned independent fashion label that celebrates the female form. Founded in 2018 as a love letter to Earth, the brand calls on women to own their sensuality, power, and capacity for love. With a mission to pay homage to their roots through the ritual of getting dressed, NIA THOMAS’s luxe knitwear is sustainably produced in NYC, Mexico, and Peru from cellulose-based fibers and plant-based dyes as a zero-waste alternative to a wasteful industry.
🔥🔥🔥Hot🔥🔥🔥

Hot Not… 🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️
people pleasing, men not picking up the check on the first date and anyone over the age of 10 in crocs…

Millie needs a home
Style icon, French queen, and ultimate cool girl, Jane Birkin sadly passed away last month. So Millie has been reflecting on her simple and effortless style, and watching it permeate across the population. Clean nails, tousled hair, and a very casual-yet-put-together look. Jane Birkin mastered it! Millie is already seeing more women lean into the ‘less is more’ style, showing their natural beauty and real skin, feeling good about being authentically themselves.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how you’re finding Capsule - let me know here. See you next week 💋
