Capsule #12 ft. Vulga Drawings

Addison, Phoebe Bridgers, and questions to ask your friends

Hiiii šŸŒž

Is it our last proper weekend of summer? Kind of? Luckily weā€™ve got loads of fun stuff in here today! Addison Raeā€™s tutu. Phoebe Bridgersā€™s safety pin bra. Questions to ask your friends over dinner. Itā€™s all quite life affirming today and I hope you enjoy it.

Also so excited to have Lily Oā€™Farrell (AKA @vulgadrawings) here to share her Hot and Not with us ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„.

Have a gorg weekend,

Holly

A moment for our It Girlā€¦

Addison Rae, of course. The EP is out (complete with a Charli XCX feature and a song taken from the Lady Gaga vault), sheā€™s in American Vogue, and most importantly, her paparazzi looks are just quintessential pop star.

Venus. Glamorous. Sexy. Material. Girl. Tube top, tummy out. And who else is wearing a tutu right now?

When we talk about musicians and what constitutes star quality, we often come back to charisma. Itā€™s hard to define, but we see it in a playfulness in interviews, through dance routines that are highly choreographed but feel like a Step Up or Honey-esque ā€œI just got peer pressured into doing this and I havenā€™t preppedā€ šŸ™ˆ, and, in the case of Addi, the smile that beams not only through her teeth but through her eyes and scrunched up nose. I think we last saw this in its fullest form in Britney, a clear inspiration point for Ms Rae. It makes us feel like we can, and donā€™t need permission to, have a bit more fun. Is there any other point to life?

Thereā€™s still time forā€¦

Your cottagecore era. Loving Kylieā€™s take on it. Itā€™s all getting a bit Pre-Raphaelite in here; the cascading hair, the muslin dress, that body.

Putting our phones away once moreā€¦

We talked in Issue 7 about photo dumps and our embarrassment when we leave it a bit late. Similar feelings were surfaced by Phoebe Bridgers at the boygenius show in Gunnersbury Park, London, this week, as she asked the crowd to put their phones away for ā€˜Letter To An Old Poetā€™ because itā€™s about ā€œthe hardest part of my adult life and Iā€™d prefer to look you in the faceā€. Itā€™s true that itā€™s hard to feel real intimacy if we spend our life trying to document it all. And sometimes, the best way to avoid that is to consciously carve out moments that are phone free. Good things often come from it! Ironically, when we resist the urge to record stuff, we remember it more clearly for its novelty. Are undocumented experiences a luxury?

At the same show Phoebe wore a safety pin bralette to join Muna on stage for ā€˜Silk Chiffonā€™. Sublime x

And finallyā€¦

For my best friendā€™s birthday last month, I asked her a set of questions to mark where sheā€™s at in her life right now. Sharing them here today for you to use at drinks and dinners with your friends over the weekend, to steer conversations down new roads, make you laugh, and remind you of how far youā€™ve come. Gorgeous to realise you no longer fancy tormented poets who canā€™t make spag bol.

This week, Lily Oā€™Farrell (AKA @vulgadrawings) popped into Capsule to share whatā€™s šŸ”„hotšŸ”„ and whatā€™s not šŸ™…ā€ā™€ļø ā€¦

Lily is a feminist cartoonist from London, and you can find her on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter (aka X but she refuses to say that). She also has a book called Kyle Theory, and in September will be releasing a documentary podcast series called ā€˜No Worries If Not!ā€™. Sheā€™s one of those busy and brilliant people you want to grab an hour with.

šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„HotšŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion by Gabrielle Stanley Blair. Itā€™s a book about how men should take more responsibility for unwanted pregnancies. Iā€˜ve become evangelical about it. Also ContraPointsā€™ YouTube channel, the episodes are long but I often just have it on in the background while Iā€™m cooking. ALSO making homemade versions of your favourite Starbucks drinks. I recently learned how to make an iced brown sugar oat shaken espresso at home and Iā€™ve saved so much money.

Hot Notā€¦ šŸ™…ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™…ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™…ā€ā™€ļø

Recently everyoneā€™s been talking about Mason Greenwood and whether he should be allowed to play for Manchester United (he shouldnā€™t be allowed), after being accused of sexual assault. A journalist from The Athletic went on The News Agents podcast to talk about it. The Athletic is a huge sports publication, and The News Agents is the most popular news podcast in the UK. This guy goes ā€˜imagine if this was your daughter, or your sisterā€™. I GROANED out loud on public transport. Iā€™m really tired of people still using the ā€˜imagine if it was your familyā€™ argument. Imagine if it was a human beingā€¦ that should be enough.

šŸ“ŗ Watching: At Home With The Furys, a new documentary/reality series following the Fury family after Tysonā€™s retirement from boxing. For our American readers - this is a famous GRT (Gypsy, Roma and Traveller) family from the north of England, known for producing Tyson Fury (undefeated heavyweight champion) and Tommy Fury (his little brother who found love on Love Island with one of our biggest influencer exports, Molly Mae Hague). The show is funny, warm, and makes you want to have a big family. It doesnā€™t shy away from showing the realities of bi-polar. And I have a real soft spot for the northern idioms and accents.

šŸ“– Reading: ā€˜What Is Lifestyle?ā€™ an essay by Daisy Alioto on the concept and origins of ā€˜lifestyleā€™, and the rise of lifestyle content as a social signifier. I now canā€™t stop thinking about storage units.

šŸŽ§ Listening to: AR, the new Addison Rae EP, ā€˜Single Soonā€™, the new song from Selena Gomez, and ā€˜Two Kinds of Silenceā€™ by Foxes, because weā€™re just doing straight up pop on this last weekend of August.

Swirl thinks it might be a good time to try and secure some biker boots, complete with ring harness, before the bottleneck arrives in Autumn and itā€™s hard to source a pair. Get the joy of a mini skirt or summer dress pairing now, and get pumped for those 15 denier tights in a few weeks. šŸļø

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed it, why not forward to a friend? šŸ˜Œ

Iā€™d also love to hear how youā€™re finding Capsule - let me know here. See you next week šŸ’‹
