Capsule #44 ft. Joel Golby

Ghosts of Coachellas past. And an argument for shared AirBnbs!

Hiiii everyone,

This week we’re unearthing some fashion ghosts of Coachellas past, which is actually a great way of documenting a specific aspect of 2010s aesthetic. We follow with some outfit recs for the modern day, which are great for the 1% of us going to the desert but even better for the rest of us sitting in parks over the next few weeks.

On the topic of summer, I’m bringing another writing excerpt to encourage you to rethink how you approach adventures and getaways.

Plus the very talented Joel Golby is here to share his Hot & Not list with us. It’s a good one!

Enjoy the weekend,

Holly x

P.S. There are quite a few images in this issue, if you’re struggling to see them or the email gets cut off, click ‘read online’ in the top corner ☝️

First up…

It’s Coachella weekend 1. If the 2010s are as back as we say they are, then so too is quintessential Coachella fashion. Today I’m here to share some iconic looks from festivals past - please enjoy within their respective historic contexts. Remember what our sensibilities really were in 2012. And then some outfit ideas for the present day. Most of us aren’t heading to the desert, I assume, but park season and day festivals and trips to the beach are coming, and we can all dabble there.

There is no more respectable place to start than with Vanessa Hudgens, a woman who has committed harder to boho chic throughout her entire adult life than any anyone else I can think of. Some people think this aesthetic is back, Baby V said honey it never left.

2013, 2018, 2022

Round sunnies. The red lenses. Flower crown. And remember those leather studded backpacks? Plus the white broderie set. You just know how covered in fake tan they get IRL. I like seeing Vanessa in her natural habitat.

The next nostalgia points are from Kylie Jenner, who may sit front row at Margiela couture now, but was raised on Tumblr and dip-dyed hair and face gems.

2014, 2015, 2016

The 2014 era is making me miss Topshop so much. Oh to be detangling a statement necklace sitting atop a random Led Zeppelin vest… And the studded bumbag, the little sister accessory to Vanessa’s bag. Things took a real turn in 2015, this was when Kylie said wigs are my thing now, and I remember us all wondering if the cap was physically attached to this one. This also felt like a moment of maturation for Kendall, who started to dress a little more supermodel from this moment onwards. And the 2016 look, those braids had a hold on me. I ordered some hair chalk and it just didn’t work the same. ❤️

Another underrated queen of Coachella is Halsey. Something for the more alternative among us, but still very California.

2019, 2019, 2022

In a similar sphere, there’s Paris Jackson, who edges it up a bit but still hits on some Coachella hallmarks: midriff out, circular sunnies, tartan.

2023, but feels older!

And finally, a special mention for Bella Thorne for bringing the chaos every time.

2016, 2019, 2018

A real accessories magnet. A rare talent for having truly five focal points in a look. You kind of have to stan…

And for some current day inspo! If one was heading to the California desert, or just a park in the coming weeks, I might suggest some of the following:

Links: Top (Rejina Pyo), skirt (Hollister), belt (Urban Outfitters), sandals (Dr Martens), bag (Free People), scrunchie (Good Squish)

Links: Top (Pull & Bear), shorts (ASOS), sandals (Oliver Bonas), earrings (Mango), bag (Free People), bandana (Toast)

Links: Cardigan (& Other Stories), top (House of CB), shorts (Adidas), cap (Idioma), sunglasses (Ganni x Ace & Tate), trainers (Hoka), socks (Paul Smith)

As we continue dreaming of summer…

Last week I offered you an Elena Ferrante excerpt to nudge you over the line of booking a summer getaway. This week I have another passage, this time from Emily Sundberg who writes Feed Me, a daily business newsletter for people who are into fashion, tech, and culture. She recently lifted her paywall for an issue on travelling, which advocates for something I think most of us avoid: booking AirBnBs where the host is in the accommodation with you.

Of her experience in Marseille, she says:

“After the sun set on the beach one evening, I went back to my room to play on my phone and try to stay quiet. My Airbnb host knocked on my door with two cold bottles of beer. We sat on her roof and I don’t even remember what we talked about besides her heartbreak over an ex who broke up with her because she wouldn’t convert to Islam, and the sale of her graphic design business which allowed her to buy this little house. A few hours later I was falling asleep with the window open and a mosquito net around me. Two kittens climbed in through the window and were licking the salami oil off my fingers and I let them sleep with me. Life is so weird.”

- Emily Sundberg for Feed Me, March 2024

You should read the whole piece, which is filled with more sweet details like these, and pieces of evidence to prove that serendipitous things happen in future when you say yes to things you don’t usually do.

And also…

Other newsy bits of Capsule interest:

  • Rihanna did an Interview mag interview, which had some good bits and pictures

  • …said pictures were shot by Nadia Lee Cohen, very much the photographer of the moment

  • Suki Waterhouse is sharing looks and vibes from her fourth trimester, and putting out new music

  • Jeremy Allen White will play Bruce Springsteen in a Nebraska-era biopic

  • Not to be all Pop Crave, but Solange stuns in new pics… and for more on why Solange portraits have more depth behind them, check out this old issue of Capsule

  • Vick Hope (married to Calvin Harris) admitted she has a cheeky listen to Taylor Swift when Calvin is out

  • And people are speculating that Dua Lipa and Miley had a fling in 2020, by looking at easter eggs in each of their music

This week, Joel Golby popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅‍♀️ …

Joel is a writer!!!!!!!!!!! His new book FOUR STARS came out this week and if you like book recommendations and short sometimes hungover podcasts then look up 'Joel Golby's Book Club'.

🔥🔥🔥Hot🔥🔥🔥

the 'eBay Jackets & Hats' Twitter account, having fresh citrus on hand, a solo pint on an almost-sunny Saturday afternoon, having a big list of restaurants on your phone, having a big list of anything on your phone, being physically unable to stop saying "bosh", 'CBDfx'-brand gummies (Passion Flower & Chamomile flavour is preferred), making cocktails at home, @one.perfect.frame on Instagram, the guy who says "good morning, chefs!" on the @lemarcheltd Reels, card games at the pub (or anywhere, really), chives

Hot Not… 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

calling it 'X, formerly known as Twitter', consuming bad culture just to participate in discourse about it, not even buying one subscription come on now, having any sort of opinion about vapes, not having any photos on your phone, spending more than about three hours a day looking at a laptop and honestly I think that's pushing it, having a cosmetic procedure and being coy about it (just tell people, it's far cooler!), crying, and I do wonder if sandwiches have had their moment now. But then: what's next?

📺 Watching: Scoop, which I enjoyed way more than expected. If nothing else, it’s a film that captures the fun of working from an office rather than from home.

📖 Reading: This Maggie Rogers profile for the New Yorker, in which she talks about falling in love, heartache, how she’s rarely been single, and her postgraduate studies. I want her life!

🎧 Listening to: The new Vampire Weekend album for daytime activities, Older, the new Lizzy McAlpine album for relaxing and ruminating, and the ‘No.1,’ by Tyla ft. Tems for that juicy bit in between.

hiiiii Matilda

Matilda keeps a firm grasp on beauty culture, and thinks that between the Rihanna cover for Interview magazine, and the doll makeup at the Margiela couture show earlier this year, we’ve had enough signals to show that blue eyeshadow is about to have its heyday.

If you’d like to adopt Matilda or one of her friends, click here to learn more.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear how you’re finding Capsule - let me know here. And if you have a friend who might like it, please forward on 🥺

See you next week 💋
