Capsule #6 ft. Claire Buckley

Our debut men's edit is here!

Hi my loves 🥰

Happy Friday and welcome Capsule issue #6 - a special one. Our very first MEN’S EDIT. 😱😎🔥

Lots of people ask me if Capsule is just for women. Of course it’ll lean that way with me as the editor, plus the ways in which fashion, beauty, and celeb culture target women. But we do have guys on the mailing list, and they are enjoying it, too. I’ve also found from talking to the men in my life that there is an appetite for more thoughtful writing on the stuff we chat about in here. So our space is open!

All this is to say: I’m excited to tell you that this week’s newsletter is written by my friend and colleague, Tom Gordon-Martin. Tom and I often talk about menswear, types of masculinity, and stuff worth reading, so I’m super pleased to share his perspective with you. He’s thoughtful and trendy: a winning combo.

I’d love to hear what you think of this issue - you can let me know (anonymously!) here, or via the link at the end.

Sending love, and passing the mic to Tom!

The trend that just doesn't seem to go out of fashion is...

Disappointing men. Another week of wondering why can't we be served with better male role models. I thought Sarah Brady's posts sharing controlling text messages from her ex, Jonah Hill, was a case study in reclaiming power, and all credit to her 👏. But it was also about the collapse of another male role model for young boys and men. In a crowded jungle of Tates and Musks, Hill, I thought, with his vulnerability, honesty, and style, was a different beast. Sadly not.

Tom! Stop catastrophising because...

Zayn Malik has spoken about how he's loving being a dad. It's not all grim. In his first interview in six years, Zayn sat down with Alex Cooper for the Call Her Daddy podcast and spoke about leaning into his dad jokes. Thank you, this is dope. I love nothing more than men talking about loving being a dad and, under pressure about how to solve the 'men in crisis' thing, I'd say positive fatherhood would be way up there. Keep it up Zayn. Welcome back to the media. You're in my 'guys I admire' group chat, for now...

No no back to trends. The real trend that won't go away is...

The short back and sides. I've been thinking about this one for a while and had my eyes open all summer for how my boys are shaping up. Yes, we're piercing our ears and switching our chains for pearls. And yes, everyone's horny for the mullet. But like a kid holding a Calippo, something we won't let go of is our love for the short back and sides. ❤️

It's mid July, so that means...

Go buy your winter jacket. H/T to fashion icon Tom Amadeus, but across the web right now gorgeous, mouth-watering puffers, windbreakers and coats are on sale. Take this Snow Peak beauty that's more than 60% off (!). I've never thought about buying winter jackets in July but it's something I'm thinking about now.

This week, Claire Buckley popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅‍♀️ …

Claire is a self-taught abstract artist based in Brooklyn, New York, with a focus on painting. Her work has been featured in galleries, corporations and private collections across the world.

rescue dogs, buying art directly from artists, cancelling plans, press on nails, 2pm diet coke, knowing everyone at your local bodega

Hot Not… 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

watching someone look through your insta, comparing yourself to others, doomscrolling, people standing too close on a line, sallie mae, zooms

Tom’s recs!

📺 Watching: Weiner - if you're into things that sit in the middle of a masculinity, US politics, and comedy Venn diagram, then this documentary is for you.

📖 Reading: I just finished All About Love by bell hooks. I bought it with my partner to read together but it was so good I couldn't wait and had to read it alone. (Yep, toxic). Get it here in the UK, here in the US.

🎧 Listening to: Grian Chatten's album 'Chaos for the Fly'. A tender, atmospheric and moving debut solo album from Fontaines DC's frontman.

Lewis (named after Capaldi, no less) has a sense that we're on the cusp of a full-blown return to the Seth Cohen aesthetic, in particular via the lace up Vans. He’s seen some cool cats around town wearing the chequered ones and can't help but save a few of them to his 'liked' section on Vinted… Pair them with a long sleeve tee under a short sleeve one, and straight legged jeans, and we're basically back in 00s...

The Seth glory days are coming back

Thanks for reading! If you liked it, why not forward to a friend? 💌

I’d love to hear how you’re finding Capsule - let me know here. See you next week 💋
